The Friesacher Au is a section of the Enns near Aich in Upper Styria . The meadow landscape is under nature protection .

Location and landscape

The Friesacher Au is 10 kilometers downstream from Schladming , below Aich (main town) from Friesach to Schlatenbach ( Michaelerberg-Pruggern municipality ). The protected area stretches from directly below the Aicher Enns bridge on Ennstalstrasse  (B320; Enns kilometer 198.7) to 500 meters above the mouth of the Schlatenbach (Enns kilometer 196.0), and includes the Enns and adjacent alluvial forests to a width of around 100 meters.

The Assach-Au sewage treatment plant is located directly north of the lower loop .

history

The Enns was regulated from 1860 onwards, but here at Aich construction work did not begin until the 1920s, after the actual project was completed with the remeasurement in 1926. At that time the Enns had a total river width of around 50-100 meters, but no tributaries. like in the Au above Aich. The river was not relocated, but narrowed and provided with bank protection. Shortly above the Schlatenbach estuary, however, two smaller loops were pierced in 1927/29 ( Prugger piercings , km 195.8–197). The measures served to protect the district road and the Ennstalbahn.

After the devastating Enns flood in 2002 , as part of the Enns Guideline 2008 project of the State of Styria, together with torrent and avalanche control and the Gesäuse National Park, an area of a silted oxbow lake below the Aich federal road bridge was reworked in a water-structural way and renatured ( widening Aich road bridge , km 198 , 3–5; together with two other areas, between Aicher Bridge and B320, and at the confluence of the Alte Lahn above).

The Au was declared a nature reserve by decision of the Political Expositur Gröbming of the Liezen district administration on November 2, 2011 ( NSG 104 c , according to § 5 para. 2 lit. c of the Styrian Nature Conservation Act ).

Nature and purpose of protection

Especially on the left bank, the Friesacher Au has a comparatively well-developed riparian wood border, which has been re-established since the regulations. A real alluvial forest (flood forest) is only formed in the area of the expansion measures. This revitalized zone shows dynamic changes in the gravel banks.

The area is a plant and animal reserve ( habitat reserve ). The protection purpose is “the preservation of the riparian forests and the animal species occurring in the protected area”. All structural measures in the area are forbidden, including the removal or damage to plants or parts of plants, although wood species that change location such as "especially" spruce, pine, larch and neophytes should be pushed back. The option of renaturation measures was also left open. The protected area has 21.7  hectares .

In addition, a large part of the area is designated as a protected part of the landscape . This is a partial area of the protected area network Enns regulation competition plots ( GLT 1258 ), which includes areas of the public sector from the time of the Enns river barriers.

The nature reserve is - with the exception of the Enns regulatory rival properties, which extend another 3 km above Aich - the westernmost protected area on the Enns, even in the Salzburg region there is no longer any signposted upstream. On the other hand, downstream there is an extensive complex of protected areas, which stretches over the Ennstal from Ardning to Pruggern to the Gesäuse National Park and the Steirische Eisenwurzen Nature Park . However, the area is still isolated from this network by around 2 km to Pruggern- Einöd .
