The Fritschlach nature reserve is a nature reserve in the Daxlanden district of Karlsruhe .
Location and scope
The nature reserve has a size of about 86.83 hectares and is horseshoe-shaped. It is located in the south of Karlsruhe in the Daxlanden district. As part of a former loop of the Rhine , it includes the Saumsee and parts of the Alter Federbach river. In the east, it is separated from the high ground . Water is supplied to the area both by precipitation and by the old Federbach.
The area is both an EU bird sanctuary (Rhine lowlands Elchesheim - Karlsruhe) and FFH area (Rhine lowlands between Wintersdorf and Karlsruhe) and therefore part of the Natura 2000 network. It was created as part of the LIFE project "Lebendige Rheinauen bei Karlsruhe".
Protection purpose
The nature reserve serves to preserve the Altrheinaue. There are primary biotopes such as floating leaf communities, reed beds and hardwood meadows . Furthermore, there are secondary biotopes of the former clay or gravel pits , litter meadows and adjacent dry locations . These are home to numerous protected and endangered plants and animals.
