Fritz Kaufmann (director)

Friedrich "Fritz" Kaufmann (born November 1, 1889 in Charlottenburg , German Empire , † 1957 in Santurce , Puerto Rico ) was a German director , screenwriter , cameraman , film producer , production manager and architect .

Life

After graduating from high school, Kaufmann began studying architecture at the Technical University of Berlin- Charlottenburg and graduated with a state examination as a graduate engineer . He then went freelance as an architect. Shortly after the end of the First World War , the film production company Deutsche Bioscop hired him to head their architecture department. In addition, Kaufmann also worked as an inventor of film technology equipment - the so-called "Hochformator" comes from him - and also worked as a journalist for a number of international (US, Dutch and Italian) publications. After Decla Kaufmann temporarily hired him as a dramaturge, the Berliner was able to present his first film director in 1922 with “ Schminke ”.

Kaufmann, married to Ada Rosenberg since 1919, fled headlong to France in March 1933, leaving behind all his belongings, as the family was warned in good time by a friend of their impending arrest. In 1939 his wife died completely unexpectedly. Later he and his daughter Germaine Kaufmann (later: Shafran) were interned in the Camp de Gurs . However, they managed to escape and they reached the United States in 1941.
