Teresa and her husband, the fisherman Enrico, spend a simple and harmonious life together in their lonely house by the sea in southern climes. One day soldiers show up to be embarked from this port town for the United States. You recognize in Teresa a former prostitute, someone even hugs her. She tries in vain to hide her past from Enrico, who is deeply disappointed about it.
Their happiness seems to have been destroyed, and Enrico is now being recruited to America as a replacement for a man who dropped out because of drunkenness. As he steps on the ship, Teresa plunges into the ocean with suicidal intent. But Enrico realizes his impending loss and saves her from drowning. The two of them emerged stronger as a couple from this crisis.
Production notes
The house by the sea was censored on February 9, 1924, was banned from young people and was premiered on March 28, 1924 in the UT Nollendorfplatz. The film ran in Austria on April 24, 1924 under the title The Soldiers .
The film was based on the play of the same name by Stefan Zweig , which premiered on October 26, 1912 at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
The film structures were designed by Kurt Richter .

In Paimann's film lists it can be read: “The subject has transferred the gripping conflicts of the reproachful work into film, just as the presentation does it completely justice. The Nielsen again offers top performance, Chamara and Steinrück are their worthy partners. Beautiful sea images in very good photography create an effective background for what happened. "
