Fritz Osswald (1913)

Fritz Osswald , actually Friedrich Osswald (born June 23, 1878 in Zurich ; † August 24, 1966 in Starnberg ), was a Swiss painter of German impressionism in the 20th century.

Life

The Swiss citizen Fritz Osswald, son of the sculptor Albert Osswald, spent his childhood and primary school in Zurich and Winterthur. He first attended the Zurich School and the School of Applied Arts in Munich and studied in the years 1898 to 1906 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as a student of Wilhelm von Diez and Nicholas Gysi . From 1904 he was a member of the Munich Secession and exhibited his pictures in the Glaspalast . In 1907 and 1908 he stayed in Italy with his wife Elsbeth, née Leopold. In 1908 his daughter Agnes Hildegard, called: Hilla, was born.

The artist often traveled between Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and after an exhibition of his works in the Kunsthalle Darmstadt in 1913, he was appointed to the Darmstadt artists' colony for the fields of painting and flat art. He lived with his wife and daughter and the painter Hanns Pellar on the Olbrichweg 16 property in Darmstadt (the building was destroyed in the air raids on September 11, 1944). The fourth exhibition of the Darmstadt artists' colony in 1914 he paid on behalf of the company directors Alfred Feist-Belmont (1883 to 1945) the sparkling Hall of company Feist with decorative murals and showed landscapes and portraits .

When the First World War broke out in 1914, Osswald was called up for Swiss military service, but was given leave of absence during the war and was able to return to the artists' colony in Darmstadt.

For his landscapes he traveled around Darmstadt and the Bergstrasse. During these years he also painted pictures of industrial plants in the Rhineland and still lifes with flowers . The literature included not only the visual arts to his great passions - by a resident bookstore he got while working in Darmstadt new releases of the then applicable as progressive writers and became deeply involved with the contemporary art magazines apart.

In 1918 Fritz Osswald returned to Switzerland and opened a studio in Horgen on Lake Zurich . In 1922 he went back to Starnberg near Munich, where he lived until his death in 1966.

Osswald was a member of the Reich Association of German Artists . His early fame is expressed in his commitment to the later much more successful Franz Marc , in order to achieve in the spring of 1909 that the two influential art dealers Justin Thannhauser and Franz Josef Brakl bought some of Marc's works and Brakl gave him one in his art dealership for the coming spring Exhibition of his works promised.

The landscape painter Fritz Osswald found his motifs in everyday life and while traveling. After his time in Darmstadt from 1918, he devoted himself almost exclusively to alpine scenes or was inspired by the moods of the Alpine foothills . He developed his passion for winter nature early on: "discovering the feeling, the feeling of snow". In fact, "the viewer of the pictures suddenly feels all alone exposed to the infinite nature, which lies so quiet and cold and at the same time appears so lively and powerful". Osswald "brings strictly naturalistic landscapes, among which the snow pictures in particular stand out with their fine mood ... each of which is pleasing in the painting of the loose snow cover with delightful blue shadows or golden winter sunshine, in a cold, clear or dim winter mood."
