Fritz Ozmec

Fritz Ozmec (born September 4, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( drummer , percussionist ).

Ozmec completed his musical training at the Vienna Conservatory . He first belonged to Fatty George's band , and then worked with Friedrich Gulda , with Fritz Pauer , and in the Hans Koller Sextet. Then he was a member of Erich Kleinschuster's sextet and, between 1976 and 1982, in the ORF Big Band ; he was also active in the Vienna Art Orchestra ( Tango from Obango , 1979) and in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Ozmec accompanied musicians such as Art Farmer , Stan Getz , Gerry Mulligan , Ray Brown , Toots Thielemans , Herbie Mann , Barney Kessel , Herb Ellis , Astrud Gilberto , but also Caterina Valente and José Feliciano at festivals and club appearances . He also led his own groups, performed with Harry Pepl and Wayne Darling as hip jargon and played with the Vienna City Ramblers . He can also be heard on albums by Richard Österreicher , Roland Batik , Teddy Ehrenreich , Uzzi Förster , Mickey Baker and JB Hutto . In 2012 he founded the Vienna Jazz Orchestra .

Since 1979 Ozmec has also taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , where he was appointed professor for drums and percussion in 1983, which he held until 2013. In 1988 he founded the university big band there, which he led for the next few decades. Between 1985 and 1990 he was also a guest lecturer at the Hamburg University of Music.
