Fritz Schnelle (born December 12, 1900 in Halle (Saale) ; † July 29, 1990 in Merzhausen , Breisgau ) was a German agricultural meteorologist and phenologist .

Life path and family

Fritz Schnelle studied agriculture at the University of Halle / S since 1924 . and received his doctorate there in 1929 under Paul Holdefleiß with the dissertation " Studies on the baking quality of wheat varieties ". He then worked as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding at the University of Halle. Due to his agrometeorological research work, he got a job with the Reich Weather Service in 1935 with the task of setting up a phenological observation network in the German Reich. After the end of the Second World War, he initially worked in a farm, and since 1946 again as a meteorologist. From 1949 to 1965 he was head of the agricultural meteorology department at the Central Office of the German Weather Service in Offenbach am Main . - One of his hobbies was genealogy , e.g. B. the origin of his mother Ida Theuerkauf from the small village Blätz near Burgstall in Saxony-Anhalt. His father was born in Barleben near Magdeburg. There grandfather and great-grandfather were master shoemakers in simple circumstances, while Johann Peter Schnelle, who came to Barleben in 1783, was born in Büden (Möckern) in 1750 , where the Schnelle family can be traced back to shortly after the Thirty Years' War. Dr. Fritz Schnell had two daughters; the younger, Inge, is married to Otto Holzapfel .

Research services

Schnell belongs to the ranks of the leading experts in the field of agro-meteorology. The agrometeorological service he set up in the Federal Republic of Germany became a model for many other countries. Schnell was a co-founder of the “International Phenological Gardens ”, in which the climatic influences on tree and shrub species are examined. Schnell has successfully promoted field climatological research and pointed out the practical benefits of the results obtained for agriculture, especially for fruit and wine growing.

Schnell's list of publications includes over 250 publications. His books on agricultural meteorology (1948), plant phenology (1955) and frost protection in plant cultivation (1963/65) deserve special mention. In 1975 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his scientific life's work .
