Fritz Spies

Friedrich Wilhelm (Fritz) Spies (born January 17, 1884 in Michelfeld ; † July 31, 1965 in Colares ) was a German- Argentinian civil engineer .

Education and professional career

Fritz Spies was the son of the master butcher Heinrich Wilhelm S. (1858–1936) and of Friederike Katharina born. Jenne (1859-1928). He attended secondary school in Mannheim and received his Abitur in 1903 . After an internship, he studied civil engineering at the TH in Karlsruhe and in Berlin . In 1907 he passed his diploma examination in Karlsruhe. From 1908 to 1953 he worked as a civil engineer in Mannheim, Berlin , South America , Portugal and Africa .

Until 1910 he worked for Dyckerhoff & Widmann in Berlin . From 1911 to 1922 Spies worked in Buenos Aires , including for Dyckerhoff & Widmann, and acquired Argentine citizenship. In Argentina he built, among other things, the Puerto Belgrano naval base , the largest naval base of the Argentine Navy, and a bridge over the Río de la Plata .

He later moved to Portugal and received a permanent residence and work permit in 1941. He worked for Grün & Bilfinger and the Sociedade Metropolitana e Colonial de Construçoes , among others . In Portugal , for example, he built the Alfeite naval port near Lisbon , the quay walls of Vila Nova de Gaia and the fishing port of Póvoa de Varzim . In Angola he built the port enlargement in Lobito , as well as the jetties in Lândana , Noqui and Cabinda .

In 1928 he married Hilde Margarete Johanna geb. Mahlau (* 1903) in Breslau . The marriage resulted in a son, Klaus (Claudio) Theodor S. (1929–1994).
