Frygnowo (German Frögenau ) is a village in the powiat Ostródzki in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It is in the immediate vicinity of the village of Grunwald (Green Fields) , about 22 km from Ostróda and 41 km from Olsztyn .
history
The village became famous because Paul von Hindenburg and his 8th Army staff led the German troops here on August 28 and 29, 1914 during the Battle of Tannenberg . A memorial stone was later erected on the site of the command post, which today serves as a signpost.
Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population in the Allenstein voting area , to which Frögenau belonged, voted on July 11, 1920 on whether it would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus to Germany) or join Poland. In Frögenau (village and estate) 300 residents voted to remain with East Prussia, Poland did not receive any votes.
