Germany's first opponent in Group 4 was the uncomfortable team from Africa, Morocco. The arduous 2: 1 success could only be secured after the 0: 1 deficit by Jarir in the second round of Müller and Seeler, which Schön let play together after long discussions in the media. But the tremendous victory did not bring any hopeful results for the further World Cup course for the Germans. Before that, the Peruvians had prevailed 3-2 in an exciting match against Bulgaria. Bulgaria was also the Germans' second opponent. For the disappointing Haller and Held, Schön took Libuda and Löhr into the team. Above all, the use of 'Stan' Libuda paid off. Despite the early 0-1 deficit, the Germans could not be thrown off the ground, because Libuda played the game of his life as a right winger, compensated for himself and served his fellow attackers after he had played his Bulgarian opponents dizzy with crosses. Gerd Müller struck three times, one time Uwe Seeler, before uncertainty in defense allowed the Bulgarians to score a second. In the last group game it was the Peruvians who had to defeat Morocco 3-0 thanks to their striker Cubillas. Due to a great first half, in which Gerd Müller convinced with a 'three-pack', while Cubillas scored one time just before the break, Germany deservedly led 3-1. After the change of sides, the Peruvians rose and got the Germans in trouble again and again. But thanks to a self-sacrificing defensive battle in merciless heat, the Helmut Schön-Elf kept the result and was allowed to play in the quarter-finals in Leon, where the German quarters were.
