Fufu (dog)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fufu or Foo Foo (* 1997 , † February 2015 in Bangkok ) was the poodle of Maha Vajiralongkorn , the Crown Prince of Thailand .

origin

Vajiralongkorn's youngest daughter, Sirivannavari Nariratana , bought the dog at the Chatuchak market in Bangkok when she was one month old, along with some hamsters, rabbits and other dogs. Due to the young age of the daughter, the dog was initially placed in an animal shelter by palace officials.

Media events

Fufu became known to a wider public when a video about him was posted on Youtube in 2007 . It showed the Crown Prince's third wife, Princess Srirasmi , wearing only a G-string and feeding the dog a birthday cake . The video, believed to have been published by opponents of the Crown Prince, became a sensation in Thailand and has been linked in media reports with a hidden power struggle for the succession to the throne of King Bhumibol Adulyadej .

The dog was also often taken on state visits and high-level receptions . The United States Ambassador to Thailand, Ralph L. Boyce , reported in a dispatch later published by Wikileaks in 2007 to his State Department of a gala in honor of the Crown Prince, at which the poodle appeared in evening attire , jumped on the table and out of the water glasses of the guests and the US ambassador. Boyce also reported that Fufu Srirasmi had been promoted to " Air Chief Marshal " (Air Force General). The poodle has become the talk of the town, the role of the master as the successor to the comparatively popular King Bhumibol Adulyadej is viewed rather critically by many Thais.

After the divorce from Princess Srirasmi, the Crown Prince and the dog were often guests in Munich, where he met his new girlfriend, a stewardess named Nui. Appearances of the future monarch in baggy jeans, with painted tattoos together with the poodle and several dozen bodyguards were among other things a topic in the Munich tabloid press . Fufu was said to have been taken for a walk in dress uniform and turquoise-colored shoes. The dog and the controversial appearances of the heir to the throne were also a topic at Foreign Policy .

In December 2013, a satirical report was written about Tongdaeng , the bitch of King Bhumibol, and Fufu, who alluded to the succession to the throne in Thailand.

After the death of the animal in 2015, its solemn cremation took place in the animal crematorium Tiertrauer in Munich; the ceremonies dragged on for several days, intensely commented on on social media. The media treatment of the dog enabled an indirect and ironic discussion about concerns about the succession of the king, which could not be openly expressed due to the strict laws on  lese majesty in Thailand .
