The Fulufjället ( Swedish ) or Fulufjellet ( Norwegian ) is a mountain range on the border between Norway ( Innlandet ) and Sweden . A large part of the mountain range is in the Swedish province of Dalarnas län , but in the Norwegian part the Fulufjället reaches its greatest height with the 1047 m high Slottet . The mountains and parts of the surrounding lowlands are protected as Fulufjället National Park in Sweden and Fulufjellet National Park in Norway. Old Tjikko , a 9550 year old spruce, is located in Fulufjäll .
location
In the west, the Fulufjäll is bounded by the valley of the river Görälven (Norwegian Ljøra ) to Drevfjäll . The largest settlement in the area is also located here, the Norwegian town of Ljørdal , where there is also a small ski area. To the east, the Fuluälven river forms the boundary of the fell. Here the Fulufjället forms the eastern boundary of the Skanden to the Swedish lowlands.
The north-south extension of the mountain range is approx. 30 kilometers, in east-west direction it is approx. 20 kilometers. The south-western section is on Norwegian territory, the rest on Swedish territory.
summit
Essentially, the Fulufjället is characterized by a plateau at an altitude of 900 to 1000 meters, from which individual summit points protrude as flat hills only slightly.
The highest elevations are:
- Slottet ( 1047 moh. )
- Brattfjället ( 1042 m above sea level )
- Storhön ( 1039 m above sea level )
There are also many lakes, especially in the north. The almost treeless plateau is generally characterized by tundra vegetation . A special feature are the dense mats made of reindeer lichen , which grow particularly high here, as there are no grazing reindeer in Fulufjället, in contrast to the more northern fells such as Idrefjället . On the steep slopes of the fells, dense forests extend to an altitude of 700 to 800 meters.
geology
The Fulufjäll is built from approx. 900 million year old sandstone with parts of diabase . Until 200 million years ago, this layer was 1,300 to 3,500 meters thick here. The slightly weathered sandstone has been steadily removed since that time, so that the fell was given its current shape. The steep slopes, block heaps and gorges on the slopes of the fell plateau were created by regressive erosion . These processes are particularly evident at Njupeskär , Sweden's highest waterfall in the north-east of Fulufjäll.
Development
The Swedish part of the Fulufjäll in particular is made accessible by many marked hiking trails that have a total length of 140 kilometers. This includes a section of the Kungsleden , the most important long-distance hiking trail in Sweden. Several of these trails have also been designed as educational trails by the national park administration. In winter, cross-country skiing trails and snowmobile routes are available. There are several self-catering cabins.
