Funa Tonaki

Funa Tonaki ( Japanese 渡 名 喜 風 南 Tonaki Funa ; * August 1, 1995 ) is a Japanese judoka . She was world champion in 2017 and second in 2018 and 2019.

Athletic career

Funa Tonaki fights in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. In 2013 she was Junior Asian Champion. In 2015 she won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Gwangju . In October 2015 Tonaki won the U21 World Championships. In 2016 she won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships after losing to Kazakhstani Galbadrachyn Otgontsetseg in the semifinals . In summer 2016 she won her first Grand Slam tournament in Tyumen. In 2017 she finished fifth at the Asian Championships after losing again to Galbadrachyn Otgontsetseg in the semifinals. In August 2017 at the World Championships in Budapest she won the semi-finals against the Kazakhstan. In the final she met the Mongolian Mönchbatyn Urantsetseg , Tonaki won and was world champion. A year later at the 2018 World Championships in Baku , she met Mönchbatyn Urantsetseg in the semi-finals and won, in the final she was defeated by 17- year-old Ukrainian Darja Bilodid . At the end of 2018 Tonaki won the Grand Slam tournament in Osaka, and at the beginning of 2019 the Grand Slam tournament in Düsseldorf. At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, she defeated Distria Krasniqi from Kosovo in the semifinals , and in the final she again lost to Darja Bilodid.
