Tomoko Fukumi

Tomoko Fukumi ( Japanese 福 見 友 子 , Fukumi Tomoko ; born June 26, 1985 in Tsuchiura ) is a former Japanese judoka who was world champion in 2009 and world championship runner-up in 2010 and 2011.

Athletic career

The 1.57 m tall Tomoko Fukumi competed in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. In 2001 she was U20 Asian champion. In 2004 she won the title at the U20 World Championships in Budapest. In 2005 she was Asian champion in Tashkent. In 2007 she won the Universiade in Bangkok . In 2008 she won the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo . In May 2009 she won the Grand Slam in Moscow . At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam, she defeated the Romanian Alina Alexandra Dumitru in the semifinals and the Spaniard Oiana Blanco in the final . At the end of 2009 she won the Grand Slam in Tokyo again, and in May 2010 she won the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro . At the 2010 World Championships in Tokyo, she met last year's finalist Oiana Blanco in her first fight and won. In the quarter-finals she defeated the Argentine Paula Pareto and in the semifinals the Brazilian Sarah Menezes , in the final she was defeated by her compatriot Haruna Asami . Two months after the World Championships, the 2010 Asian Games took place in Guangzhou . In the final, Fukumi was defeated by the Chinese Wu Shugen . A month after the Asian Games, she won the Tokyo Grand Slam for the third time. In 2011 she won the Grand Slam in Moscow. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris she defeated the French Frédérique Jossinet in the quarter-finals and the Belgian Charline Van Snick in the semifinals . As in 2010, she lost to Haruna Asami in the final. A quarter of a year after the World Championships, the two met in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo, after three tournament victories Tomoko Fukumi came second this time. In early 2012, Fukumi won the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris against Sarah Menezes. At the Olympic Games in London Fukumi defeated Oiana Blanco in her first fight and the British Kelly Edwards in her second fight . After her quarter-final victory over Paula Pareto, she lost in the semi-finals to Alina Alexandra Dumitru and in the battle for bronze to the Hungarian Éva Csernoviczki .
