Ami Kondo

Ami Kondo ( Japanese 近藤 亜 美 Kondo Ami ; born May 9, 1995 in Nagoya ) is a Japanese judoka . She won an Olympic bronze medal in 2016 and was world champion in 2014, each in the extra lightweight division.

Career

The 1.56 m tall Ami Kondo was the 2011 U17 world champion. In August 2014 she defeated the Cuban Maria Celia Laborde in the semifinals at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk and the Argentine Paula Pareto in the final . Two months after winning the world title in the adult class, Ami Kondo also won the U21 World Championships. At the 2015 World Championships in Astana, Kondo was defeated by South Korean Jeong Bo-kyeong in the quarter -finals , with victories in the hoping round over Hungarian Éva Csernoviczki and Brazilian Nathalia Brigida, the Japanese won a bronze medal. The following year, Kondo reached the semifinals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with victories over the Mexican Edna Carrillo and the Kazakh Galbadrachyn Otgontsetseg . After her loss to Paula Pareto, the Japanese won the battle for the bronze medal against the Mongolian Urantsetsey Munkhbat .

At the 2017 World Championships, Kondo lost to Mongolian Munkhbaat in the semifinals, and Kondo won a bronze medal with a victory over Serbian Milica Nikolić . In 2018 Kondo did not take part in the World Championships but in the Asian Games in Jakarta . There she defeated the Kazakh Galbadrachyn Otgontsetseg in the semifinals, in the final she was defeated by the South Korean Jeong Bo-kyeong.
