description

Vegetative characteristics

Furcraea cabuya grows with stemless or stem-forming rosettes . The trunk is then up to 1 meter high and covered with old leaves. The lanceolate, openly concave leaves point abruptly above their base. Their green leaf blades , which are glaucoma when young , are semi-succulent and leathery. It is 150 to 200 centimeters long and 14 to 22 centimeters wide. The leaf margin is straight between the marginal teeth. On the leaf margins there are triangular, strong, usually forward-facing marginal teeth 5 to 8 millimeters (rarely up to 11 millimeters) in length. They are yellowish to chestnut brown, descending and are 25 to 45 millimeters (rarely up to 50 millimeters) apart along the entire edge. At the tip of the leaf there is a reddish or dark chestnut brown, conical terminal spine that is 1 to 3 millimeters (rarely up to 5 millimeters) long and 1 to 1.3 millimeters wide.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence reaches a height of 5 to 10 meters and has a long shaft. The finely downy-haired to bald partial inflorescences are up to 1 meter long. They sometimes have elongated bulbils . The bracts are much shorter than the bare 3 to 6 millimeters (rarely up to 12 millimeters) long flower stalks . The three to six blooms standing together are about 55 to 62 millimeters (rarely from 45 millimeters) long. Their elliptical, light green to yellowish green tepals have a length of about 30 to 36 millimeters (rarely from 26 millimeters) and are 11 to 15 millimeters (rarely from 8 millimeters) wide. The overlapping parts are hairy. The inner tepals are a little wider than the outer ones at 13 to 18 millimeters. The stamens are 11 to 26 millimeters long. The ovary has a length of 23 to 28 millimeters. The stylus is 16 to 22 millimeters long.

Nothing is known about the fruits and seeds .

Systematics and distribution

Furcraea cabuya is common in southeastern Mexico and Central America . The distribution area of Furcraea cabuya var. Cabuya extends from the Mexican state of Yucatán via Honduras , Nicaragua , Costa Rica to Panama , where the species is only known to be cultivated. It is also often cultivated in other countries. It grows in thorn forest, savannah and pine forest at altitudes of 300 to 1400 meters, rarely from 50 meters. Furcraea cabuya var. Integra is known in Costa Rica and Panama exclusively from culture and grows there at altitudes of 100 to 600 meters.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1816. Furcraea cabuya is classified in the genus in the section Furcraea .

A distinction is made between the following varieties .

  • Furcraea cabuya var. Cabuya
  • Furcraea cabuya var. Integra Trel.

Furcraea cabuya var. Integra seems to be a selection that is unarmed and produces smaller flowers.

Furcraea cabuya var. Integra
The differences to Furcraea cabuya var. Cabuya are: the deciduous leaves usually have no marginal teeth or there are rarely a few 2 to 3 millimeters (rarely up to 6 millimeters) long near the leaf base. A terminal mandrel is usually missing or it is 2 millimeters long and 0.7 millimeters wide. The flowers are 45 to 52 millimeters (rarely from 37 millimeters) long. Their narrow elliptical to elliptical tepals are 25 to 28 millimeters (rarely from 23 millimeters) long and 7 to 14 millimeters wide. The stamens have a length of 10 to 14 millimeters, the ovary from 20 to 25 millimeters and the style from 14 to 19 millimeters. The elongated to almost square fruits are 6 inches long and 4.5 inches wide.
