Gábor Török (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gábor Török (* 1952 in Budapest ) is a German artist of Hungarian descent.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Hungary, Gábor Török initially trained as a goldsmith and silversmith. This was followed by an apprenticeship as a restorer at the National Museum in Budapest , where he then worked for some time. Due to his excellent performance in fencing, he was admitted to the sports course, which he completed in 1978 as a fencing master. In 1979 he left for a training camp in the West and applied for asylum in Germany.

In Frankfurt he began a targeted career as an artist. Since 1980 he has regularly participated in international exhibitions and trade fairs. Long periods of work in Pietrasanta and Carrara at the end of the 1980s were one of the defining factors .

From 1989 to 2004 he built the International Artists' Center 695 out of former greenhouses in Frankfurt , which housed studios, a gallery and a theater under one roof. Architecturally impressively designed, the building with approx. 2400 cubic meters resembled a walk-in, social sculpture . Török not only shaped the theater through numerous artistically demanding stage sets, but also successfully staged his own play The Apple .

Since 2005 he has been living and working as a freelance sculptor in Wiesbaden , where he also repeatedly realizes architectural projects.

At the beginning of his artistic career, Török developed small-format metal reliefs, always in combination with wooden supports, which were characterized by narrative pictorial motifs and were produced in series.

There was a radical break in the late 1980s. During longer work stays in Pietrasanta , significantly larger, freer works were created from Bianco Carrara , whose roots lay in classical modernism. Some of the titles of his early marble sculptures Homage to Rodin's Thinker or Homage to Max Bill refer to models, but in the end Török developed his own style within a few years, which he still follows formally today; albeit in different materials. Based on a previously chosen title, Török develops flowing movements and sensual geometries from linear basic bodies. This contradiction, this apparent impossibility and outwitting of mathematics is inherent in all objects, as it were Török's trademark.

After several large objects from stainless steel , to Török focused since the turn of the century on in bronze executed sculptures . Compact in size, varied in the patination, and always in small editions, they offer him the ideal opportunity to express a diverse topic.

In addition, large sculptures are created, some in public spaces . These sculptures are not only a material volume, they also intervene in the space around them and reinterpret it. These works are always specially created for the respective location and deal with it in terms of content. The dimension is of great importance here, the material adapts to the conditions. The lines impress with dynamism, inner tension and elegance.
