Gérard Bourgarel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gérard Bourgarel (* 1931 in Geneva ; † September 19, 2012 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was a coffee trader, politician and author. He founded the Emmaus Community in Geneva in 1954 and, with the Civitas Nostra association, campaigned for peace in Algeria that same year . He is considered the initiator of the Pro Freiburg (Pro Friborg) association founded in 1964 .

Life

After completing his commercial training, he did not implement his father's wish to succeed him in the coffee wholesaling business, but turned to the fine arts . His experiences in the destroyed post-war Germany , the misery in the Parisian banlieues and the poverty in the outskirts of Lyon sharpened his humanistic thoughts.

From 1960 he lived in the Freiburg district of Bourg , where he witnessed the destruction of urban residential areas, which he vehemently opposed. Bourgarel found comrades-in-arms and founded an association that was able to maintain the traditional Freiburg cityscape. In 1982 Bourgarel was elected to the Freiburg City Council, a position he held for nine years and gave up in 1991 in favor of a seat in the Grand Council of Freiburg in the canton of Friborg . Until 1999 he worked there for the Green Party of Switzerland (Les Verts fribourgeois / Green Freiburg).
