Gérard Walther

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gérard Walther (* 1943 in Carcassonne ) is a French graphic artist and painter who has lived and worked in Hamburg since 1970 .

life and work

Gérard Walther studied from 1961 at the École nationale supérieure d'arts de Dijon . From 1970 to 1974 he attended the Hamburg Art School Alsterdamm, where he trained as a graphic designer. He then practiced this profession in the city and also worked as a freelance artist. Walther has been a lecturer and teacher for visual arts and media art since 1990 .

His paintings, in which he also works with collage techniques , often show “maltreated city dwellers” with often incomplete, damaged, genderless and faceless bodies. Walther often uses black, green and gray tones with which he wants to express threatening social disintegration. With their blurred contours, the motifs of his pictures fluctuate between figurative and abstract art and at the same time appear surreal .
