The Götaland was a railway ferry that was used on the royal line between Sassnitz and Trelleborg for almost 20 years .

history

Götaland

On October 5, 1972, what was then the largest train ferry (length 149.10 meters) was launched on the Nakskov Skibsværft in Nakskov . The client was the ferry company of the Swedish State Railways ( Statens Järnvägars Färjedrifte ). It was designed primarily for the transport of goods wagons and trucks. On April 18, 1973 it was handed over to the client; on April 26, 1973 she was ready for her service on the royal line. The first scheduled trip between Trelleborg and Sassnitz (then Saßnitz) was on May 1, 1973, from then on it was used as a freight ferry on this route. From 1977 to 1981 it was a replacement ferry, after which it served again as the main cargo ferry.

In 1992 she was rebuilt on the Öresundsvarvet in Landskrona , the deckhouse was raised by 2.7 meters. This created space for an additional car deck for 35 cars, and the passenger capacity increased from 36 to 400 people. From then on it served as a combined ferry for passengers and goods. The owner was now SweFerry AB , a subsidiary of the Swedish State Railways.

From November 1993 to February 1994 the ferry was rebuilt again on the Öresundsvarvet, adding a 33.6 meter long middle section. In addition, a side ramp for loading the main deck and 42 double cabins were installed on the starboard side. The total length of the ship increased to 183 meters. Until June 1994 she was back in service on the royal line.

From June 1994 to August 1998 it was in service on the newly created Rostock – Trelleborg ferry connection , after which it was used on the TravemündeTrelleborg route . In 2000, SweFerry joined Stena Line , which placed the ferry with its subsidiary Scandlines AB . In January 2010 she was chartered to TT-Line , but continued to be used on the same route.

Apollonia

In spring 2010 she was sold to the VG Transport Terminal Company in Moscow and placed under the management of the Moscow shipping company Anship. On September 22, 2010 the ship left its home port Trelleborg for the last time, was brought under the Lithuanian flag on September 24 and laid up in Klaipėda . In December 2010 she was renamed Apollonia , her home port was now Basseterre ( St. Kitts and Nevis ). In 2011 it was used irregularly between Baltiysk and Sassnitz. Then it was launched in front of Baltijsk and later in Klaipėda.

In February 2012 it was sold to the Sireny Management company in Giurgiulești , which belongs to the shipping company Anship , and carried the flag of the Republic of Moldova . In March 2012 the ferry left the Baltic Sea for good in the direction of Sevastopol , where it was laid up for a time. In 2012 it was used briefly between Mersin (Turkey) and Port Said (Egypt).

It was sold again in April 2013 and arrived in Aliağa (Turkey) on May 23, 2013 , where it was scrapped.

Furnishing

The Götaland had a railway deck with five tracks and a total track length of 568 meters (811 meters after the renovation), which was also used for road vehicles. The railway vehicles drove in and out through a stern ramp, the road vehicles also via a ramp at the stern and on the starboard side. The ferry was last approved for 400 passengers. The ship was powered by two diesel engines with a total of 14,000 hp with two propellers. It also had two bow thrusters and a bow rudder for reverse travel.
