Günter Steiger

Günter Steiger (born March 21, 1925 in Dresden , † March 30, 1987 in Jena ) was a German historian, library director and curator .

Life

Steiger was born the son of a worker, trained as a bricklayer and was then drafted into the armed forces. He was badly wounded in World War II . He attended a preparatory college and studied history, art history and German at the universities in Leipzig and Jena . He became a research assistant to Max Steinmetz . Steiger moved from the history seminar to the Jena University Library and became director there in 1970. A year later he was appointed first curator of the university and in 1975 he was appointed associate professor . A commemorative plaque in the courtyard of the Collegium Jenense honors Steiger's services to monument protection and cultural history.
