Günther Drefahl
Günther Drefahl (born May 11, 1922 in Rostock ; † July 28, 2013 in Jena ) was a German chemist . He was a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR and chairman of the GDR Peace Council .
Life
Drefahl studied chemistry from 1940 to 1945 at the University of Rostock . In 1946 he received his doctorate with Kurt Maurer on the subject of selective oxidation of primary alcohol groups. The oxidation with nitrogen tetroxide and was then appointed as a lecturer for inorganic chemistry in the teaching body of the University of Rostock at the age of 23. In 1949 he completed his habilitation. A substitute for the time of denazification, which was only scheduled for a few months, finally became three years. Then in September 1949 he was appointed professor with a teaching position for organic chemistry and chemistry of natural substances at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . “ At the age of 27, he was appointed the youngest professor of organic chemistry at the time. “In 1957 he became a full professor with a chair in organic chemistry and director of the institute for organic chemistry and biochemistry. Drefahl was rector of the Friedrich Schiller University from 1962 to 1968. In 1962 he received the GDR National Prize . In 1963 he became a member of the Research Council of the GDR , in 1964 a full member of the German Academy of Sciences . In 1982 Drefahl received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rostock . He received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze, silver (1979) and gold (1982) and in 1987 the honor bar for the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold. In 1987 he retired.
politics
From 1969 to 1989 he was President of the Peace Council of the GDR . In 1970 he became a member of the Presidium of the Committee for European Security in the GDR. In 1983 he became Vice President of the World Peace Council . Drefahl was a representative of the Kulturbund of the GDR in the 8th Volkskammer and in the 9th Volkskammer of the GDR . In the Modrow government he was involved in drawing up new electoral laws for the German Democratic Republic . On September 27, 1989 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Jena ; honorary citizenship was revoked on March 20, 1991.
