Günther Greindl

Günther Greindl (born March 18, 1939 in Ried im Traunkreis ) is an Austrian professional officer with the last rank of general . He was active in various UN missions in a leading position for the Austrian delegation and also in military-related diplomatic assignments.

Military career

Greindl began his military career after graduating in 1957 with basic military service with the Tyrolean Field Battalion in Kufstein . From 1958 to 1961 he attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . Five years later, Greindl completed a general staff course from 1966 to 1969 at the National Defense Academy in Vienna . In addition to his military career, he studied at the Vienna University of Technology , the Department of Regional Planning from and graduated as an engineer.

After serving in various positions in the armed forces until 1965 , Greindl took over as commander of a tank battalion from 1969. In July 1977 he was assigned to a UN mission for the first time and until September 1978 commanded the Austrian UN contingent in Cyprus . He was then Deputy Chief of Staff in the Ministry of Defense until April 1979 . Another UN mission followed as head of the UNDOF ( UNDOF Ausbatt ) observation force on the Golan Heights on the border between Israel and Syria . He was then from 1981 to 1989 commander of the UN peacekeeping forces and commander of the UNFICYP control force in Cyprus.

After completion of this work as UN Force Commander Dalberg was founded in 1989 as an Austrian defense attaché in Switzerland posted. In April 1991 he was again entrusted with a United Nations mission and appointed Chief Military Observer of the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM). On his return he was appointed head of the General Staff Group for Military Policy and Security Cooperation, a position he held until 2000.

From 1992 to 2002 Greindl was also chairman of the UN project "The Use of Military and Civil Defense Assets in Disaster Relief" (MCDA) and co-chairman of a UN conference in Oslo, in the guidelines for the use of military forces in the international Disaster Relief (Oslo Guidelines) have been adopted.

From October 1993 to April 1994 he was the UN Secretary General's Special Representative in the United Nations Protection Force in the former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR). In August 2000 he was appointed the first Austrian military representative to the EU , NATO and military delegate to the WEU in Brussels.

In 2002 he was promoted to general. Greindl is the founding president of the Association of Austrian Peacekeepers and Vice President of Eurodefense Austria. In 2013 he was awarded the Egon Ranshofen-Wertheimer Prize .

Greindl is married and has three sons.
