Günther Makiri Schellong (born January 15, 1926 in Kiel ; † October 10, 2015 in Münster ) was a German pediatrician and university professor specializing in pediatric hematology and oncology .

Life

Günther Schellong was born in Kiel in 1926 as the first of four children of internist Fritz Schellong and his wife Anneliese (also a doctor). After completing his medical studies in 1951, he worked as an assistant doctor at the Medical University Clinic Göttingen with Rudolf Schoen and later at the pathological institute in Freiburg with Franz Büchner .

In 1954 he joined the Münster University Children's Clinic , which was headed by Hermann Mai , as an assistant doctor . There he completed his habilitation in 1961 with a thesis on jaundice neonatorum and became senior physician in 1963. In 1973 he was appointed Full Professor and Head of the Department of Hematology and Oncology. From 1976 until his retirement in 1991 he was director of the University Children's Hospital in Münster.

After his retirement, Schellong devoted himself to researching the long-term effects of the treatment of Hodgkin's disease and developing hemato-oncology in the successor states of the Soviet Union, particularly in Ukraine .

power

Schellong is considered one of the pioneers of modern pediatric hematology and oncology. The rhesus prophylaxis , in the testing and introduction of which he played a key role, prevented the consequences of an rhesus blood group incompatibility between mother and newborn.

Schellong was one of the three founding members of the BFM study group in pediatric oncology and hematology in the 1970s. In this network he took over the management of the studies of acute myeloid leukemia and later of Hodgkin's lymphoma. In doing so, he made fundamental contributions to improving the chances of survival for children and adolescents with cancer.

The long-term effects of Hodgkin's disease therapy could be investigated through the studies he designed and led into old age with a follow-up period that is unique in the field. From the knowledge gained, important recommendations for action and follow-up care for the patients were derived.
