Günther Wagner (chemist)

Günther Wagner (born October 27, 1925 in Grünhainichen , Erzgebirge , † May 29, 1999 in Leipzig ) was a German pharmacist , professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Leipzig .

Wagner studied pharmacy from 1948 at the University of Greifswald with his doctorate in 1952 and his habilitation in 1955. From 1959 he was professor and director of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Chemistry in Leipzig, from 1964 as a full professor. In 1991 he retired .

Wagner was one of the most prominent representatives of pharmaceutical chemistry in the GDR. He wrote two textbooks about it with his colleague Hans Kühmstedt (Professor in Greifswald), dealt with analytical pharmaceutical chemistry and with the synthesis of glycosides and heterocycles. He conducted research on isomeric transformations of glycosides and developed serine - protease inhibitors in the form of amidines .
