Günther Widmann (born June 4, 1937 in Bozen as Günther Meraner ; † September 9, 1996 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian architect . His field of activity was residential and industrial buildings as well as village renewal in the Navistal , North Tyrol .

Life

Widmann was born on June 4, 1937 in Bozen, the son of the German teacher Caroline Meraner and the sculptor Hans Plangger . After the mother and son emigrated to Innsbruck in 1938, she married the representative Heinz Widmann, who adopted her son. After the war, Günther Widmann graduated from the building trade school HTL-Ingenieur in Innsbruck and in 1957 studied architecture under Roland Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . After completing his studies in 1961, he worked as an architect in the office of architect Gerhard Garstenauer in Salzburg until he set up his own business in Innsbruck in 1972 and founded the Widmann architectural office. In 1963 he married the architect and later freelance art photographer Irene Widmann, née Hausl, with whom he had a daughter, Claudia Widmann (actress) in 1964, and a son, Clemens Johannes Widmann (architect) in 1967.

His enthusiasm for traveling through European countries, the USA, Egypt, Guatemala, Venezuela and Mexico connected him to his wife Irene. Günther Widmann began taking Hasselblad photography as early as the 1970s , which became a constant companion on his travels. His fondness for jazz and socializing were very important to him. Countless artists such as Anton Christian , Inge Dick , Hellmut Bruch , Nino Malfatti and Monika Posch Pfeifle have been among his friends and companions since he was a student at the academy.

Create

Günther Widmann was shaped in the early years by the influence of his teacher Roland Rainer and by the work in the Garstenauer architecture office in the 1960s. Cubic buildings in the international style with simple shapes determined the architectural language. Single-family houses and one of the first terraced house settlements (Kalkofenweg / Arzl) in Tyrol were built during this time. Working with the Swiss architect Rudolf Olgiati and traveling to Ticino, he came up with a mixture of modern and traditional architecture, which combined the formal language of the Alpine roof shapes with the modern architectural design elements of the 1950s and 1960s. Architect G. Widmann redesigned several hotels and inns in the state capital and became a specialist for conversions in hotels and lodging establishments in Austria.

During his creative period, Widmann realized countless single and multi-family houses in Tyrol and Lower Austria, as well as the Kalkofenweg terrace settlement in Innsbruck-Arzl. The industrial buildings, tool hall Kofler, Fulpmes and locksmith Fritz, Grabenweg, Innsbruck are among the most important industrial buildings of the 1970s and 1980s in Tyrol. Hotel conversions such as Hotel Krone, Hotel Neue-Post, Gasthaus Weißes Rössl, Hotel Weißes Kreuz (all in Innsbruck), as well as Hotel Kaiser in Kitzbühel, Gasthof Stangl in Thaur, Pension Villerspitze in Praxmar and Gasthof Ropferhof in Buchen are among the important hotel redesigns between 1970 and 1990 in North Tyrolean architecture.

Günther Widmann has been in charge of village renewal in Navistal for 15 years and managed village renewal in the Navis. Under his leadership, the Vidum, the Navis parish hall, the kindergarten, the forecourt, as well as numerous farms and the chapels along the streets in the Navis Valley were renovated. In the course of village renewal in the state of Tyrol, new settlements were planned and a village renewal concept was drawn up with the municipality of Navis.

The BORG Innsbruck , Bundes-Oberstufen-Realgymnasium Fallmerayerstraße, was completely renovated by Widmann and subsequently by his son, the architect Clemens Widmann, between 1993 and 1996.

After his death in 1996, the architectural office was taken over by the architect Clemens Widmann.
