The GAS-station Berlin - petrol station for art and impulse was founded in 2008 as a non-commercial and independently working exhibition and project space in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The initiators are the artist and author Elisa Asenbaum , who comes from Vienna , and the Austrian musician and artistic self-taught Thomas Maximilian Stuck, who have been working together artistically as Graphic Art Sound since 1990 . The GAS-station Berlin is dedicated to contemporary art. In addition to works of visual and digital art, performative, literary and scientific works are presented in thematic contexts and accompanied by events, lectures, film screenings, readings and discussions. Events are free of charge.

The GAS-station Berlin - petrol station for art and impulse has been an active member of the network of free Berlin project spaces and initiatives since 2011 and shares its principles and self-image. The project space supports the independent and non-commercial free art scene in Berlin.

Artistic focus

The focus of the artistic concept of the GAS-station Berlin is on interdisciplinary, topic-specific exhibition projects that are openly advertised and curated and in which not only artists from all fields but also scientists in particular present their positions on the topic in an artistic context. Since it was founded, the GAS-station Berlin has presented around 30 exhibitions with more than 350 contributors from art and science. Formats are visual arts, digital and performing arts , photography , film , literature and science . The interdisciplinary exhibition projects include musical installations and performances , readings and specialist lectures as well as thematic tours through the exhibitions.

GAS-station Berlin sees itself as an experimental platform to try out new artistic exhibition formats and forms of presentation. It is important to stimulate participatory, artistic collaboration across borders. From 2014 Elisa Asenbaum and Thomas Maximilian Stuck have tried out and enabled specially developed concepts for process-based, cross-disciplinary collaboration between artists and scientists. The results of this collaborative artistic working method and interdisciplinary collaboration were presented in the exhibitions Augustina dreams - in progressius (2015–2016) and Schein und Spiegelung, a relational position project (2017–2019).

In addition to interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary exhibitions, there are shorter exhibition series such as Das Fenster or x | y | z: RAUMPROJEKT , an experimental format for visual arts and new media , in which artists develop and present thematic installations specifically for the space.

Awards

For its artistic work, GAS-station Berlin received the award of 30,000 euros for artistic project spaces and initiatives from the Senate Department for Culture and Europe of the State of Berlin in 2015 and 2017 .

From the statement by State Secretary Dr. Thorsten Wöhlert on September 14, 2017: “With their ideas, their cooperative and participatory working methods, the award winners challenge a new artistic practice that finds its public without being market-oriented. They often look for and find not only improvised locations or unusual formats, but also special topics, contexts and addressees. The award for this special cultural effort, the appreciation of the aesthetic power and diversity of the project spaces and initiatives should have a motivating effect on all those involved and thus help maintain diversity and creativity. "
