Ralf Tekaat is a draftsman. In his pencil drawings, he uses dense hatching to model objects that appear futuristic, but whose dimensions cannot be precisely defined. “But as concrete - material, technoid, fetish-like - the objects appear too - real dimensions and real weight cannot be read. The drawings could be construction sketches. [...] On the sheet of paper, things lead an artificial life of their own, shadowless, anchorless, unfinished with artistic intent, and present themselves as drafts and ideas. They are distant from reality and at the same time irritatingly close. "

His wall and room-filling installations are more of a narrative character. In his work In Search of Thomas R. Pynchon (2002/2003), for which he received the Bremen Fine Arts Award in 2002, he traces the figure of the fugitive writer Thomas Pynchon . Real and fictional material - obtained during research during a stay in New York - creates a conspiratorial and fragmentary network of topographical, biographical and literary orientations. Through the formal interconnection of different media - drawing, photography, found object - the identities of author and artist overlap.

In another installation DALLAS and what am I telling my children , Tekaat addresses his memory of his grandfather and why he did not talk about his wartime and Soviet imprisonment. The central moment of this work is the question that the artist asks himself - but also his generation - “What could or should the grandchildren have done to get his grandfather to talk?” These handwritten “scraps of memory” are contrasted. with Tekaat's childhood photos, in which he reenacts battles between Indians and cowboys or even soldiers on a scale of 1:72 from the Second World War with his characters . "The artist as a seeker, one who pokes the grandfathers' silence on behalf of the grandchildren, a youngster who in this way takes up Gerhard Richter's approach to researching the German past."

Together with the Bremen artist Norbert Bauer, Tekaat invented and developed the rocket man, a German superhero, who appeared for the first time in 1954 at the soccer world championship final in Bern (also known as The Miracle of Bern ) and since then, although mostly anonymously, accomplishes his deeds in the Federal Republic. With this figure, the artists have tried to interweave classic patterns of American superhero tales with German post-war history. The work and appearance of the rocket man is documented using sketches, photos, film and a brochure.

In a new joint project, Bauer / Tekaat dedicate themselves to “BROKDORF” (2008/2009) on political symbols and research into myths. The West German anti-nuclear movement experienced its inexorable rise and its greatest defeats in Brokdorf . Using drawings, found objects, observations, photographs and videos, Bauer and Tekaat create a fictional archive of social trench warfare since the early 1980s.
