action

The carpet dealer and UFO photo forger, Arif, like many other inhabitants of the world who believe in the existence of aliens, is kidnapped from the planet Gora by the Turkish-speaking aliens. The kidnapping is led by the villain Commander Logar. In the course of the film the reason for the enslavement of the people is explained: Commander Logar's great-grandfather, Commander Kubar, had a traumatic experience during his visit to earth: His companion was raped by a farmer. The resulting hatred of the earth lives on in Logar.

While in captivity on Gora, Arif befriends the prison functionary Bob Marley Faruk and later the android 216. Arif makes several attempts to escape, but they fail. Everything changes when a meteorite threatens Gora. This meteorite can be stopped with the holy stones, however Logar suggests an alternative after secretly burning the instruction manual of the holy stones. To save Gora with a special weapon, he demands the hand of Princess Ceku, although his interest in this marriage is primarily due to political power. His suggestion is accepted, but the weapon does not work. Arif, however, succeeds in activating the sacred stones with the four elements and destroying the meteorite by kissing Ceku in the middle of the four stones, which he says he has already seen in the movie The Fifth Element . Logar accuses Arif of deception and succeeds in getting him captured again.

The father of Ceku, the commander Tocha, refuses Logar Ceku's hand because he is not the one who saved the planet. Logar threatens to publish photos that reveal that Commander Tocha is homosexual . Tocha is afraid these photos will be published and gives him an appointment for the wedding.

Ceku, who hates Logar as much as Arif, tries to save Arif and find a way out after learning from her mother that her father is not in command of Tocha. For the rescue, Arif is given a key card that opens all doors of the prison. Together with Ceku, Bob Marley Faruk and 216, he flees to the no man's land outside the protected city. Logar pursues the four, finally can bring Ceku under his control and believes to have killed the others. Arif and his companions finally meet Garavel, whom Arif has repeatedly seen as a vision. He trains Arif in various martial arts and tells the truth about the princess: Her father was (like himself) a Turkish fighter pilot and planned to flee to earth with his lover and their daughter. He had built a spaceship for this, too, but died before he escaped. So Arif is supposed to flee from Gora with Ceku.

The three return to town to rescue Ceku from Logar's control. As he penetrated through the ventilation shafts, Arif can observe Commander Logar together with his adjudicator and a third man in a very clear situation. The video recordings of this Menage à Trois also contain Logar's statement that he was responsible for the meteorite and cheated on the commander with forged photos. Arif storms the wedding celebration between Ceku and Logar. Thanks to his skills he can defeat the intervening Guardians and even dodge Logar's radiation shots. The compromising recording is shown and Logar is released from his service. Arif and Ceku marry and return to earth together.

Reviews

“Refreshingly cheeky Turkish science fiction parody that targets icons of the genre, especially the 'Matrix' trilogy. It doesn’t go off without a lot of nonsense and gay jokes, but the film has a light-heartedness that gives it some charm. "

background

The film opened in German cinemas on November 18, 2004.

GORA is not the first Turkish science fiction film, but with a production cost of 5 million euros it is one of the most expensive Turkish films of all time. GORA is a parody of science fiction films like Star Wars , Matrix and The Fifth Element with clear references to Turkish culture and everyday life. Cem Yılmaz took on four roles in this film: the main character “Arif”, the anti hero “Commander Logar”, and in flashbacks his great grandfather “Commander (Komutan) Kubar” and the film producer “Erşan Kuneri”.

What is remarkable and new about this film is that, as a lavishly produced Turkish film tailored to an international audience, it was shown in German cinemas exclusively in its original language and nevertheless made it to number 8 in the box office. The film was made in 2004 in the Antalya Film Studios in Turkey. The film had more than 4 million viewers in Turkey, making it the most commercially successful after Valley of the Wolves - Iraq .
