Gabriel Despland (born December 4, 1901 in Villars-Lussery , † January 27, 1983 in Lausanne , resident in Cossonay ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

biography

After studying veterinary medicine in Lausanne and Bern , Despland opened his own veterinary practice in Echallens .

Despland became the mayor elected by Echallens and sat from 1934 to 1944 as a radical representative in the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud . He also had a seat on the National Council from 1941 to 1943 , and then on the Council of States from 1943 to 1967 . In 1959/60 he was President of the Council of States .

In 1945 he was elected to the State Council of the canton of Vaud , where he headed the building department for a year before heading the interior department from 1946 to 1961.

Among other things, he was chairman of the committee for the introduction of women's suffrage in Switzerland , the Swiss Traffic Center, the 1954 Swiss Federal Rifle Festival in Lausanne, and Expo64 .

In the political life of the canton of Vaud, Despland is considered an outstanding figure of the post-war period. He was in the Helvetia student union . In the Swiss Army he was a colonel and head of the veterinary department of an army corps.
