Gabriel Hoefner

Gabriel Höfner Sr. (* May 16, 1842 in Türnitz , Lower Austria ; † March 4, 1921 in Wolfsberg , Carinthia ) was an Austrian entomologist , musician and composer .

Life

Gabriel Höfner was born as the son of master glassmaker Vinzenz Höfner in Türnitz in Lower Austria on May 16, 1842. The highly gifted boy, who was already fully literate at the age of five, was apprenticed to a watchmaker in Stein an der Donau when he was 12 years old. After his apprenticeship years in Stein ad Donau and Neulengbach, he came to Klagenfurt as an assistant in 1860 and to Wolfsberg in 1861 . Here he became self-employed as a watchmaker and also found a connection to the band of the 12th Infantry Regiment, which was then garrisoned in Wolfsberg, and thus a welcome field of activity for his high musical skills.

In 1865 he put together a band for which he, who had never had regular music lessons, wrote various compositions such as dance pieces, male choirs and military marches. For various musical circles he co-founded, such as B. a wind quintet and a string sextet, he created not only instrumentation but also his own compositions.

In 1891 he became a music teacher at the newly founded Wolfsberg Music School. He devoted his free time to butterfly studies, where he also achieved remarkable achievements, also here as an autodidact. He researched the Lavanttal, the Koralpe and Saualpe , for which areas he identified over 1,600 species, including some new ones that he himself described. His work forms one of the foundations for lepidopterology in Carinthia. He came to botany through caterpillar breeding and also acquired extensive knowledge here.

Services

Gabriel Höfner wrote the first butterfly fauna in Carinthia. Beginning in 1910, the Carinthian butterflies appeared in the yearbook of the Natural History Museum and in Carinthia II , the last part posthumously in 1922. He described the following taxa on lepidoptera : Micropterix aureoviredella (Höfner, 1898); Montanima karavankensis (Höfner, 1888); Elachista albicapilla (Hofner, 1918); Elachista argentifasciella (Hofner, 1898).

Gabriel Höfner discovered a new saxifrage species in the Pressinggraben with "Waldsteinia vernata". A small butterfly that he discovered on the Zirbitzkogel bears his name "Gnophua operaria Hoefneri".

He was the director of the Wolfsberg Music School, played several instruments and also composed.
