Gabriel Melconián

José Gabriel Melconián Alvez (born July 7, 1987 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan swimmer .

The 1.82 meter tall athlete is the younger brother of swimmer Martín Melconian . He belongs to the Club Biguá de Villa Biarritz and holds numerous national records in swimming . His coach is the Uruguayan Olympic participant from 1996 Javier Golovchenko .

Melconián set a national club record on November 4, 2006 together with M. Acosta , Rementeria and M. Levrero in the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay. A few days later he won the bronze medal in the 100 meters freestyle as well as the 4 × 100 freestyle relay at the South American Games in Buenos Aires in 2006 . He took part in the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 and in Guadalajara in 2011 . In 2011 he was there 12th over 100 meters freestyle. On the same route, he finished sixth at the South American Championships held in Belém in March 2012. In the 50 meter freestyle competition there, he improved the Uruguayan record held by Francisco Picasso and Martín Kutscher twice to initially 22.76 seconds and later 22.73 seconds. With that he secured the Olympic qualification for this route.

The Argentine swimming championships, the Campeonato Argentino de Natación , he completed in June 2012 as a four-time gold medalist. He was successful three times in individual races and once with the River team . In the course of his career Melconián already managed to beat Ian Thorpe .

Melconián was part of the Uruguayan team for the 2012 Summer Olympics . In London , a start over the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle course was planned. He missed participating in the Beijing Games four years earlier due to a broken hand. In his 100-meter freestyle run-up in London, Melconián, whose record over this distance is 50.10 seconds, only managed 6th place with a time of 50.68 seconds, thus missing the semifinals and finishing the competition in 35th . among 56 starters. In 2013 he started at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona , but failed in both the 50 meters freestyle and the 50 meters butterfly in the run-up.

  • 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay (national team) (03: 21.06, set up in the composition with P. Kutscher , M. Kutscher and F. Picasso on July 17, 2007 in Rio de Janeiro )
  • 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay (club) (03: 38.37, set up in combination with Mutilva , M. Levrero and Rementeria on November 6, 2005 in Campus)
  • 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay (club) (8: 11.86, set up in the composition with M. Acosta , Rementeria and M. Levrero on November 4, 2006 in Campus)
