Gabriel Sedlmayr , later Ritter von Sedlmayr (born April 5, 1850 in Munich ; † January 14, 1931 there ), was a Bavarian entrepreneur and Munich corps student.

Life

As the oldest son of the owner of the Leistbrauerei , Josef Sedlmayr, his professional training was predetermined and geared towards the continuation of his father's business. He became active in the Corps Germania in 1866 and studied brewing. After completing his studies, he passed the master's examination in brewing. His further training in the large Dreher brewery in Schwechat near Vienna is of particular importance, as it was here that he became familiar with the production of Märzenbier , which the Franziskaner brewery introduced at the Oktoberfest at his instigation .

During his studies he followed his cousin Gabriel von Seidl and joined the Corps Germania . As the main financier of the corp house, his portrait, together with that of Seidl, as an architect, adorns the vestibule of the corp house to this day.

A study trip to England and visits to other breweries in Germany complemented his training and, after completing his experience under his father's supervision, Sedlmayr took over his parents' business in 1875.

Gabriel Sedlmayr was active for many years in various committees of the Bavarian and German economy. From 1876 onwards, he was head of the scientific station for breweries in Munich for decades . For many years he was a member of the board of the brewery and malting trade association, member of the board of the Bavarian Brewers Association and committee member of the German Brewers Association . He also worked as a commercial judge, member of the Upper Bavarian District Administrator, committee member and board member of the Polytechnic Association, board member of the Munich Trade Association and the Bavarian Industrial Association. Sedlmayr also took an active part in the economic rise of Germany before the First World War, as chairman of the Bavarian Auditing Association for many years and as chairman of the supervisory board of Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank .

Sedlmayr was a nephew of Gabriel Sedlmayr and a corps brother of his cousin Gabriel von Seidl , the mothers were sisters. From 1923 to 1931 Sedlmayr was the first honorary chairman of the Philistine of the Corps Germania Munich . He was buried in the southern cemetery in Munich (grave 5/16/28 A).

Oktoberfest

Sedlmayr saw to it that the festival beer still in use today, Märzenbier, was introduced. In addition, it is thanks to the connection between Sedlmayr and the Schottenhamel family that the Munich student associations can still use their boxes in the oldest marquee at Oktoberfest.
