Gabriel Sandu (born November 7, 1952 in Bucharest , † October 1, 1998 ) was a Romanian football player . He denied 211 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career

Sandus career began at Metalul Bucharest , in the summer of 1970 he transferred to local rivals Dinamo Bucharest in the first Romanian league, the Divizia A . He made his debut on May 2, 1971 and was used in the last nine games of the season. At the end of the season he won the Romanian championship . In the following season Dinamo could not defend its title, but was again at the top at the end of the 1972/73 season . In the subsequent European Cup , Sandu and his team reached the second round by beating Northern Irish champions Crusaders FC 11-0 , but were eliminated from the eventual finalists Atlético Madrid . Two more titles followed, the 1975 championship and the 1977 championship .

In 1980, Sandu left Dinamo after ten years after he had not been used regularly in the previous three years, and joined the promoted Progresul Vulcan Bucharest . In the 1980/81 season he managed to stay with Progresul. In the following season he came only to one use and could not avoid the relegation of Progresul. In 1982 he ended his career.

National team

Sandu played a total of 22 games for the Romanian national team between 1974 and 1976 , scoring two goals. He made his debut in the team coached by Valentin Stănescu on June 5, 1974 in a friendly against the Netherlands . In 1975 he became a regular in the defense and formed an established formation with Florin Cheran , Teodor Anghelini and Alexander Szatmári . However, as second behind Spain , they missed qualifying for the 1976 European Championship . The new national coach Ștefan Kovács also initially relied on Sandu. On September 22, 1976, he played his last international match against Czechoslovakia .
