Gabriele Lavia

Gabriele Lavia (born October 10, 1942 in Milan ) is an Italian director , dramaturge and actor . Lavia is one of the most important theater directors in Italy over the past forty years.

life and work

Lavia studied dramaturgy and theater studies at the L'Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica in Rome . After graduating in 1963, he worked with several Italian directors such as Giancarlo Sbragia , Luigi Squarzina , Giorgio Strehler and Mario Missiroli .

Lavia has directed several films. His films Scandalosa Gilda , Sensi (both with partner Monica Guerritore in the lead role) and La lupa are particularly influenced by the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder . However, Lavia has also worked on less demanding productions. With Dario Argento he made the films Rosso - Color of Death , Horror Infernal and with Pupi Avati the film Cedar - Because the dead return .

He made his stage actor debut in 1975 with the play Othello by William Shakespeare . His film Il principe di Homburg based on Heinrich von Kleist was awarded the Italian film prize Nastro d'Argento in 1984. He made his debut as an opera director in 1984 with the play I pellegrini alla Mecca (Les pèlerins de la Mecque / Die Pilger von Mekka) by Christoph Willibald Gluck .

Lavia worked as artistic director for the Teatro Eliseo in Rome (1980–1987), for the Teatro Stabile in Turin (1997–2000) and the Taormina Culture Festival (1993). In the 2011/2012 season Lavia worked for the first time at the "San Francisco Opera".
