action

Rose Elliott lives alone in New York City as a poet . In a book called The Three Mothers , she reads that she probably lives in the house of the Mater Tenebrarum (Mother of Darkness), one of three witches who strive for world domination. She writes this to her brother Mark, who lives in Rome , who then decides to visit his sister. In the meantime, Rose finds out that the stories in the book are true and is beheaded by a monstrous figure shortly afterwards. Mark, who arrives in New York shortly after Rose's death, decides to investigate the case. In the house he meets the mute Professor Arnold, who is sitting in a wheelchair, and his nurse. In the further course all people who question Mark or want to help him are murdered.

Mark finds out that Rose told him in encrypted form that there is a crawl floor under that floor of her apartment building. As he examines it, he meets Professor Arnold who, dying after a fight, tells him via his mechanical speech generator that they are being watched. Mark spots a shadow and follows it. In an adjoining room he finds Professor Arnold's nurse, who reveals herself to be the witch Mater Tenebrarum. She turns into actual death and wants to kill Mark. A fire caused by a burning woman eventually burns the house down. The witch burns while Mark escapes.

With 61% positive votes, the rating on Rotten Tomatoes is rather average. The lexicon of international film also judges rather negatively.

"A horror piece that reveals skill in the build-up of tension and camera work, but repels with its blood and murder orgies."

However, the film received positive reviews in the works Die Angst sits next to you and Inferno Italia. The Italian horror film :

"[...]" Horror Infernal "offers, on the surface, like all of Argento's other films, only an outrageously thin story off the shelf, but it is packaged in a virtuoso form and through some of the most oppressive scenes that have occurred recently the screen passed, not soon forgotten. [...] "

“Horror Infernal” stands out from all of Argento's other works. [...] With its corridors, corridors and alleys illuminated in psychedelic colors, "Horror Infernal" captivates as Argento's ultimate version of a nightmare captured on film. "
