Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia

Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia , née Gabrielle Buffet , (born November 21, 1881 in Fontainebleau , † December 7, 1985 in Paris ) was a French musician , art critic and writer associated with Dadaism . She was the first wife of the painter Francis Picabia .

Life

Gabrielle Buffet was the daughter of Alphée Buffet and his wife Laure Hugueteau de Chaillé. She studied music at the Schola Cantorum in Paris with Vincent d'Indy , later in Berlin with Ferruccio Busoni . In January 1909 she married the painter Francis Picabia , and her influence inspired him to compose his paintings like pieces of music. In Zurich they met Hans Arp and Tristan Tzara . In October 1912 her family were in the house in Étival beside her husband Guillaume Apollinaire and Marcel Duchamp guest. Apollinaire finished his poem Zone there , which is the cycle of poemsAlcools initiates. Duchamp created a preliminary stage for his work La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même . As a result of the meeting, the book of essays on cubism , Les peintres cubistes , was written by Apollinaire and financed by Picabia.

The marriage to Francis Picabia, who had four children, was divorced in 1930. From 1941, during the Second World War , she was a member of the Resistance in Paris alongside Samuel Beckett , Mary Reynolds , Suzanne Picabia and others .

Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia died in Paris at the age of 104.
