Gadolinium (III) iodide is an inorganic chemical compound of gadolinium from the group of iodides .
Extraction and presentation
Gadolinium (III) iodide can be obtained by reacting gadolinium with iodine .
It is also possible to display it by reacting gadolinium with mercury (II) iodide in a vacuum at 500 ° C.
Gadolinium (III) iodide hydrate can be converted to the anhydrate by dehydration with a large excess of ammonium iodide (as the compound is prone to hydrolysis ).
properties
Gadolinium (III) iodide is a yellow, strongly hygroscopic solid with a crystal structure of the bismuth (III) iodide type. In air, it quickly absorbs moisture and forms hydrates. The corresponding oxide iodide is also easily formed at elevated temperatures.
