Gadso Weiland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gadso Friedrich Johannes Weiland (born February 21, 1869 in Pageroe , † 1915 in Schleswig ) was a German graphic artist and painter who lived in Arnis from 1903 until shortly before his death . He was an Art Nouveau artist who became known with designs for the art weaving school in Scherrebek , with the design of bookplates and elements of book decoration.

Life

Weiland was born on a farm near Pageroe on the Schlei . For health reasons he had to break off the visit to the cathedral school in Schleswig and went to Hanover to do an apprenticeship as a decorative painter . In 1890/91 and 1896/97 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Düsseldorf . During his studies he began to work in the spirit of the Art Nouveau that was just emerging. In 1896, not only did the first issue of the magazine Jugend come out, but an art weaving school was also founded in Scherrebek in northern Schleswig, which was immediately recognized throughout Germany. With 26 tapestries, Weiland was the most productive artist at this production facility.

In 1903 he moved to Arnis with his wife Agnes Christine, where they bought the house at Lange Straße 65 with the help of an inheritance. Since Weiland soon had major health problems, it was mainly his wife who got the family through financially.

In addition to the designs for the textile picture knitting , Weiland worked for the Hamburg foundry Genzsch und Heise, among others. He designed the decorative letters, moldings and other ornaments of book art , which were very popular at the time . In 1908, for example, he published a volume on Toscana fonts together with Julius Klinkhardt's type foundry and brass line factory . He also illustrated fairy tales and children's books.

The third focus of his work was drawing bookplates . Since Agnes Weiland learned how to make tapestries according to Scherrebeker style in Kiel, she was able to continue to implement her husband's designs after the production there was closed.

Exhibitions

In 1900, Weiland was involved with 27 textile designs and drawings in the "exhibition of the century" at the Thaulow Museum in Kiel .
