The Gajševsko jezero is a flood retention basin in the municipality of Križevci in the Štajerska region in northeastern Slovenia . The facility built in the 1970s dams the Ščavnica river near Ljutomer .
Location and surroundings
The lake is south of the municipality of Križevci , nestled between the towns Gajševci and grave pri Ljutomeru, at the point where the Ščavnica -Tal to Murbecken ( Mursko polje opens). Although a large part of the water area is administratively counted to the grave, Gajševci on the southwest bank was eponymous. The canalized Lipnica runs parallel to the north bank and flows into the Ščavnica immediately after the end of the reservoir. The regionally important small town of Ljutomer is about 6 km downstream.
Water quality
The Gajševsko jezero is one of 17 Slovenian standing waters , the water quality of which was monitored from 2003 to 2006. The measured values from 2006 confirm that the “heavily modified water body” has a eutrophic to hypertrophic (very nutrient-rich) chemical status.

Under these conditions, the lake is home to numerous organisms such as mussels and various types of fish, including perch , bream , pike , roach , silver carp , catfish and pikeperch . In addition to the habitat function , the muddy soil gives the water a brownish color and turbidity . The slow current also allows a dense network of aquatic and marsh plants to flourish in the western section .
In August 2010, 7151 fish weighing 74 kg were caught in the nets at several collection points spread across the lake over a total period of twelve hours. The water temperature during the investigation was 23 ° C, the oxygen content 5.5 µg / l, which corresponds to an oxygen saturation of 66%. The pH was slightly basic at 8.4 , the electrical conductivity was measured at 343 µS / cm.
use
The village of Grabe pri Ljutomeru, which consists of a few houses, was often hit by the Ščavnica floods in the past . To counteract this, the 77 hectare retention basin was built in 1973 as the river was straightened . There are different details about both the capacity and the water area of the system. The Slovenian environmental authority puts the volume at 2.6 million m³. The original plan was to use the backwater to irrigate agricultural areas.
Although the lake has great tourist potential, it is mainly used by the local population for recreational purposes. It is also very popular with anglers . A variety of species can be caught on 10 hectares, which are managed by the Ljutomer fishing club. Seasonally, surfers use the favorable southeast wind. The water body is bordered by a nearly 2.9 km long dike hardened with quarry stone and covered with wire mesh , which has been crossed on a gravelled footpath and bike path since 2016. Fishing competitions or other events such as motorcycle meetings on the lakeshore take place at irregular intervals.
