Witchtrap is a Colombian thrash metal band from Medellín that was founded in 1992 under the name Dark Millenium .

history

The band was founded in 1992 under the name Dark Millenium and initially consisted of the singer and guitarist Carlos Mario Uribe Muñoz aka "Burning Ax Ripper", the drummer Hugo Alberto Uribe Muñoz aka "Witchhammer", and the guitarist Edison "Enforcer" Gil and the bass player performing as "Slayerblade". The latter lost an arm a little later in an accident, which made it no longer possible for him to remain in the band. In 1993 the name was changed to Witchtrap. The group took its name from the horror film of the same name from the 1980s. In 1997 a first demo appeared under the name The First Necromancy , on which the cast had no bass player, which was followed by the recording of another called Turn in Your Graves in the following year , which was never released. Then Alexander "Darkmoon" Garcia joined the group as bass player. In 2000 the EP Witching Metal was released by Malignant Productions in an edition of 500 copies. In 2002 Hell Attacks Productions released their debut album Sorceress Bitch . Towards the end of the year, bassist Garcia left the line-up, and the following year, former Dark Millennium second guitarist Edison "Enforcer" Gil returned to the line-up. In 2004 Sorceress Bitch was re-released on Ordealis Records in France . Followed in 2005 by the publication of the compilation The First Necromancy & Turn in Your Graves in Japan at Obliteration Records , consisting of these two demos. In the same year, other re-releases followed: Sorceress Bitch appeared with a bonus song on Utterly Somber Creations Records in the USA , while Witching Metal was reissued on the band's own label Dirty Sound Records in Colombia. The same label released the second album No Anesthesia in May 2006 . It was released in December on Hells Headbangers Records in the USA and Witching Metal was re-released there that same year. In the same year the split- release Thrash Metal Blitzkrieg Vol. II , in which the three other bands Death Thrashers Kuopio, Bloodthirst and Hangman took part, was published by Deathstrike Records and Iron Bonehead Productions . Then came the EP Nightmares of the Dead (2007 on Dirty Sound Records), with two other bands in the USA the split release United in Annihilation (2008 on Ground Zero Entertainment ) and with the Greek band Revenge the split release Holocaust (2009 at the Greek label Alucard Records ). The debut album Sorceress Bitch received two re-releases in Colombia via Hell Attacks Productions during this period. Further re-releases followed in 2011: Nightmares of the Dead was released on Metal Squad Records in Argentina , in the USA the EP was released with three cover songs as a bonus on Hells Headbangers Records. In 2012 he signed a contract with Hells Headbangers Records for a period of seven years. Thereupon the album Vengeance Is My Name was released in the same year on this label in the USA, but the release in Colombia took place on Dirty Sound Records. A short time later the album was reissued at Old Goat Corpse Productions in Malaysia . For the twentieth anniversary, the EP Dark Millenium was released via Dirty Sound Records in Colombia. In Germany , the record was released by Dying Victims Productions . In 2014, No Anesthesia was subsequently re-released as a deluxe box by Hell Attacks Productions for the band's 20th anniversary. In the same year, a split release with NunSlaughter appeared on Hells Headbangers Records in the USA . The following year Witchtrap released the fourth album on Dirty Sound Records, titled Trap the Witch .

In addition to his own publications, Witchtrap also participated in various tribute albums , such as Reunation for Running Wild (2009), Masacrando El Imperio Del Terror for Masacre (2011) and Summoning the Hounds of Hell for Venom (2015). The band is also featured on the samplers To Meet the Storm (1998), Ataque Demoniaco Vol. 1 (2004) and 30 Years of War, Fight Sweat and Blood (2013).

style

According to the Facebook presence, the band was initially a death metal band before they turned to thrash metal after the name change. In an interview with metalcorefanzine.com , Hugo Alberto Uribe Muñoz stated that he came to metal back then, in early 1987, through a homework on the history of rock . His first albums were Kill 'Em All by Metallica and Slayers Hell Awaits . The group itself was heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal , German Power and Heavy Metal of the early 1980s, US Heavy Metal of the early 1980s, and Hard Rock of the 1970s.

Jamie Cansdale of metal-observer.com found that Sorceress Bitch included fast-playing German-style Thrash Metal influenced by Black Metal . Only occasionally do the band slow down a bit or get a bit “ funky ”. Overall, the music is raw and aggressive, and also an important milestone in the South American Metals like Dios ha muerto of Acutor . nocturnalcult.com stated that No Anesthesia contains dirty and sloppily played Thrash Metal, drawing on ideas from groups such as Venom , Destruction , Slayer, Motörhead , other early Thrash Metal bands and groups from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal serve. The vocals bring back memories of those of Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer from Destruction. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Vengeance Is My Name that you can hear Thrash Metal on it in the classic style and, above all, think of early destruction, early creator and darkness . Mühlmann also felt reminded of Schirmer by the singing. The sound of the songs "fluctuates between razor and better demo production". Björn Backes from Powermetal.de also assigned the band to classic Thrash Metal in his review of Trap the Witch . Backes said about the comparison of the label, which described the music as a mixture of the Razor album Evil Invaders and Endless Pain by Kreator, that the group resembles Razor especially in the slower passages, otherwise the Kreator comparison makes more sense. The singing is similar to that of a young Mille Petrozza .
