Gallus Knauer

Gallus Knauer (born January 15, 1654 in Weismain , † February 3, 1728 in Klosterlangheim ) was abbot of the Langheim monastery .

Life

Gallus Knauer was a son of the Weismain town clerk Ambrosius Knauer and a nephew of the former abbot Mauritius Knauer . He studied in Bamberg and entered Langheim Abbey in 1673. Elected abbot on July 13, 1690, he ruled the monastery for 37 years. Before that he had provided the parish of Zeil from the Langheimer Klosterhof Schmachtenberg from 1685 to 1690 .

Abbot Knauer was a thrifty administrator and brought the monastery to a new bloom. Above all, he made a contribution to the baroque expansion of the monastery. He had the Nassanger , the castle and the Hofmeister building built in Trieb , the large Mönchshof with the rock cellar in Kulmbach and a wing of the Tambach Castle , as well as the stately bakery and the abbey building in Langheim. He also saved large amounts of money and in kind. In order to maintain the monastic independence from the bishopric of Bamberg and the Margraviate Bayreuth-Brandenburg-Kulmbach , he led several trials up to the Reichshofrat in Vienna.

He died on the night of February 2nd to 3rd, 1728.
