Galston ( Gaelic : Baile nan Gall ) is a village in the north of the Scottish Council Area East Ayrshire or in the traditional county of Ayrshire . It is located about seven kilometers east of Kilmarnock and nine kilometers north of Mauchline on the left bank of the Irvine .

history

As early as the 15th century, the Campbell clan had a tower house built nearby. This formed the nucleus of Loudoun Castle , which was completed in 1811. It was considered the " Windsor of Scotland" until it was devastated by a fire in December 1941 . Another defense tower was also built in the course of the 15th century. Over the centuries it was expanded into the mansion of Cessnock Castle . Sornhill Farm manor is believed to date back to the 1660s.

The village developed with the settlement of Huguenots in the 17th century. In addition to coal mining, paper and textile production was pursued in Galston. The latter was operated until the 20th century. In 1862 Galston was installed as Police Burgh . Loudoun Castle , which opened in 1996, was closed again in 2010. The Loudoun Academy is located southwest of the castle ruins .

The A719 ( Mossblown - Fenwick ) is Galston's main thoroughfare. To the north, the A71 ( Edinburgh - Irvine ) is a national trunk road. In 1848 Galston got its own train station. It was closed along with the route in the 1960s. With the Glasgow Prestwick Airport is an international airport located about 15 kilometers south-west.
