Gamani Corea

Gamani Corea (born November 4, 1925 in British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka ); † November 3, 2013 in Colombo , Sri Lanka) was a Sri Lankan diplomat who, among other things, was Secretary General of the United Nations Conference from 1974 to 1984 for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was.

Life

After attending school, Corea first studied at the University of Ceylon and later at Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge . He then completed a postgraduate degree in economics at the University of Oxford with a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Economics) .

He then joined the government of what was then Ceylon in 1952 and initially took on tasks in the planning secretariat of the Ministry of Planning and Economics and was also secretary of the National Planning Council until 1960. As director for economic research at the Bank of Ceylon from 1960 to 1964, he was part of a team of experts in 1964 that prepared the foundation of UNCTAD. After it was founded on December 30, 1964, he was chairman of the UNCTAD expert group on international currency affairs in 1965 and 1969. During this time he was permanent secretary in the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs from 1965 to 1970 and then until 1973 Vice-Governor of the Bank of Ceylon.

After serving as chairman of a United Nations conference on cocoa in 1972, he was chairman of the UN Committee for Development Planning between 1972 and 1974, of which he was previously a member. He was also in 1973 Ambassador of Sri Lank in the European Economic Community (EEC) and the Benelux -Staaten.

In April 1974 Corea was appointed to succeed Manuel Pérez-Guerrero as the third Secretary General of UNCTAD and held this position for ten years until December 1984.

After leaving UNCTAD, he continued to take on important tasks within international organizations under international law , particularly in the so-called south-south affairs of the Third World . Between 2002 and 2003 he was chairman of the South Center, an organization for developing countries based in Geneva .
