Gambia Bird Airlines Ltd. ceased operations in 2014. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation.

Gambia Bird Ltd. was a Gambian airline based in Serekunda - Kanifing and a subsidiary of the former German airline Germania .

history

Gambia Bird was founded in 2012 and began flight operations on October 22, 2012 on the route from Banjul to Dakar . The airline offered connections within West Africa and to Europe. Gambia Bird was 90% owned by the German airline Germania . The management as well as the staff came mostly from Germany.

Gambia Bird ceased operations on December 30, 2014 with immediate effect. The reasons given were the decline in bookings and the outbreak of the Ebola fever epidemic .

As a consequence of the cessation of operations, Germania had to write off around 20 million euros and thus got into financial difficulties. After their bankruptcy in 2019, the insolvency administrator initiated investigations against the former management due to controversial activities related to Gambia Bird.

Destinations

Gambia Bird mainly served destinations in West Africa from their base at Banjul International Airport . From October 24, 2012, there were regular flights to London in Europe , and from October 28, 2012 to Barcelona . Flights to Lagos and Douala had been planned for the future, but no authorization from the authorities was available until flight operations were suspended.

Due to the Ebola virus epidemic , Gambia Bird suspended flights to London on August 27th. On October 22, 2014 it was also announced that the British Ministry of Transport revoked Gambia Bird's license for flights to London.

fleet

The flights of the Gambia Bird were aircraft of Germania Express in wetlease performed. Germania Technik in Berlin also took on the maintenance of the aircraft. When flight operations ceased at the end of 2014, the fleet consisted of an Airbus A319-100 ; the plan was to use an Airbus A321-200 , which was no longer used.
