Pope Formosus (891-896) created 14 (according to other sources only eleven) cardinals in his five-year pontificate .

Almost all of the cardinals appointed by Formosus in 896 turned under Pope Stephen VI. (896-897) against him and in 896 signed a decree against the dead Pope, which prepared the so-called synod of corpses . They were at a synod in April 898 by John IX. excommunicated
