List of cardinals created by Sergius II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pope Sergius II (844–847) appointed his future successor Leo IV as cardinal priest during his pontificate . Appointments of other cardinals are uncertain or have been handed down according to legend.

844

  • Leo , cardinal priest of Santi Quattro Coronati , from January 847 Pope Leo IV, † July 17, 855
  • The news of an elevation of Amalarius († around 850), a Franconian liturgist and former Archbishop of Trier , to cardinal priest of an unknown titular church this year goes back to confused notes in Benedictine martyrologies from more recent times and is an error or a mistake. The naming of Amalarius Fortunatus as the “first German cardinal” is unhistorical and cannot be found in older or more recent literature.

846

  • Nicholas, questionable appointment of an otherwise unknown cardinal deacon
