Game of Games is a German game show that has been broadcast on Sat.1 since September 2018 . The show, hosted by Bülent Ceylan , is based on the concept of the US game show Ellen's Game of Games , which first aired in December 2017.

The first six-part season aired from September 14 to October 19, 2018. In February 2019 it was announced that there will be no second season due to the weak audience.

concept

In the show, candidates compete against each other in various game and quiz rounds. The candidates have previously applied for the show and are sitting in the audience. However, this will not be announced during the show, instead an arbitrary selection of candidates by the presenter Bülent Ceylan is suggested.

In each episode, five games of skill are played in a preliminary round, each with a certain number of candidates. Two to four candidates take part in each game of skill. The winner of the respective game then qualifies for the quarter-final game Locker on the stool . Four of the five candidates qualify for the semi-finals. They have to answer questions one after the other in this quiz round entitled Siegen oder Flug . The last remaining player has the chance to win up to 50,000 euros in the final.

Preliminary round matches

The following alphabetically sorted games have so far been used for the preliminary round:

  • Off through the ceiling : three candidates are each tied to a harness . The candidates take turns naming answers that fit a certain category (e.g. nouns in the song Wahnsinn ). A category ends when a candidate gives an incorrect answer, repeats a previous answer, or takes too long to answer. This candidate receives a cross. The candidates who have three crosses are eliminated and thrown upwards. The last candidate qualifies for the quarter-finals.
  • Off to the basket : two candidates are tied to each other by a bungee rope . Then they have to pick up apples with their mouths in opposite directions and place them in a box. The first to put five apples in that box will qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • The bad word : two couples compete against each other. One partner has to get the other partner to guess a term. You can only give one word as a hint. However, it is forbidden to utter a certain word. If several terms are mentioned as a hint or if you think about it for too long, a cannon shoots slime, flour, etc. at the advising partner. If you are shot three times, you lose the game. The other pair qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Soaped : Two couples are bound to each other by a full body suit. Each couple must take an exercise ball from a box and place it in an opposite and slightly higher hole. There is a slippery surface and swinging obstacles. The first couple to throw five balls into the hole qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Peak of horror : two couples compete against each other. Before candidates can answer a quiz question, couples must climb a pyramid of steps. Both members of the couple must be on top of the pyramid. The obstacles are slippery surfaces, fog and slime, as well as height-adjustable steps. There is one point for each correct answer. The first pair to have three points qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Huh ?! : Eight candidates form two teams of four. One member of the team needs to send a sentence to the other member. They wear headphones and therefore have to lip read. The fourth member communicates the sentence to the moderator that he understood. There is one point for each correct word from the original sentence in the uttered sentence. The team that collects the most points wins the game. One of the winning teams qualifies for the quarter-finals.
  • Don't let yourself down! : Two couples compete against each other. As in an auction, two candidates offer how many answers their partner can give in a certain category (e.g. countries with the euro as their official currency ) within 30 seconds. The partner who made the highest bid obliges the other partner to carry out the task. When the required number of answers have been provided, the opponent falls from the ceiling into a tub of slime. If the required number of responses has not been delivered, it falls into a slime pan itself. If you fail to complete the task three times, you lose the game. The pair who did not fall into the slime tub three times qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Get wet : Two candidates are asked a quiz question. If you think you know the answer to the question, grab a drinking bottle from the table, which will splash water if you squeeze it too hard. If the answer is correct, the candidate can choose an umbrella and pull on it. The candidate has to find the umbrella with the golden glitter in it to qualify for the quarter-finals. If it is the wrong umbrella, it will rain water on the candidate.
  • Master Blaster : Three candidates are each attached to a bungee cord. They each solve an identically structured puzzle. The first to solve the puzzle qualifies for the quarter-finals. The other two candidates are thrown through the studio.
  • Spin cycle : Two candidates compete against each other. Before candidates can answer a quiz question, they are turned around in a seat to disorient them. To answer the question, candidates must run to a nearby and moving podium and grab the ball there. The first candidate to answer three questions correctly will qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Tuba of horror : two candidates competed against each other. You sit in front of a row of buttons that look like valves on a tuba . Each candidate is asked a question in turn. When a candidate answers a question incorrectly, Ceylan spins a wheel to determine how many valves (one, two, or three) the candidate must press. One of the valves causes the candidate's large tuba to expel foam. If this happens to you, you lose the game. The candidate who is not foamed will qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Tooth for tooth : Two candidates take turns standing in the oversized mouth of a cardboard monster to answer a guessing question. The answer to the respective question is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. The difference between the answer given and the correct answer determines how many teeth the candidate must pull from the monster. If the answer given is correct, no tooth will be extracted. If you pull the wrong tooth, you will be swallowed by the must and lose the game. The candidate who is not swallowed by the monster qualifies for the quarter-finals.

Final round matches

  • Relaxed on the stool : The five preliminary round winners are blindfolded for two rounds. They dance on a dance floor. When the music ends, they have to find a chair that rises from the floor. Ceylan uses buttons on a desk to decide which chairs are raised. Two chairs rise per lap. The two candidates, each sitting on a chair, qualify for the semi-final game. The candidate who has not received a chair after two rounds is eliminated from the game show.
  • Win or fly : The four winners of the quarter-finals stand on a platform, more precisely on a trapdoor, and receive a question one after the other. If a candidate answers a question incorrectly, they will fall through the open trapdoor. The last remaining candidate wins the game and is in the final.

final

  • Photo finish : The winner of the semifinals has 30 seconds to identify the faces of ten celebrities who come from a category (e.g. German cinema and TV stars in the first episode). After identifying a celebrity, the candidate has to press a button to advance to the next image. The candidate can push one picture away and thus receive the next picture. The amount to be won is based on the number of faces that he correctly identified (see table). With a correct identification of ten celebrities, the candidate receives the main prize of 50,000 euros .

Production and broadcast

At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the German comedian Bülent Ceylan switched from TV station RTL to Sat.1 and thus signed an exclusive contract , as was announced by Sat.1 at the Screenforce Days on June 21, 2018. reception

criticism

The game show is received relatively positively in the press. The one and a half hour episode length is viewed positively, since other, new TV shows run for around three to four hours. The swiftly played games are also entertaining. The selection of normal candidates from the studio audience and thus the renouncement of celebrities is also praised. However, their wild jumps for joy are too much, but they ensure the good atmosphere in the studio. The presenter Bülent Ceylan himself is confident, has a lot of fun and great joy in the show. The 30-second final game, which ensures that the show ends somewhat abruptly, is criticized.

"Entertaining games and a motivated moderator ensure good entertainment."

"Despite the superlative in the title," Game of Games "has become a small, entertaining, easy-going game show."
