The gamma retroviruses are a genus from the retrovirus family ( Retroviridae ). They belong to the simple retroviruses. Many types of gamma retroviruses cause tumors such as sarcomas and leukemias , such as the murine leukemia virus (MLV), the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or the feline sarcoma virus (FeSV).

Many endogenous retroviruses , closely related to gamma retroviruses , are found in the DNA of various mammalian species, including humans and mice, as well as in the genome of birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
