Map of Gardiners Creek and its tributaries |
The Gardiners Creek (originally Kooyongkoot Creek ) is a stream in southern Australian state of Victoria . It runs through the eastern districts of Melbourne and flows into the Yarra River .
In a few places on its banks there is still original alluvial forest , but for the most part it runs through urbanized areas and so the stream was regulated in the same way as other streams in the urban area, e.g. B. Mullum Mullum Creek or Koonung Creek . The Gardiners Creek Trail follows the stream for almost its entire length.
Origin of name
The stream was originally called Kooyongkoot . This is a word from the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri-Baluk Aboriginal tribe , which can be translated as 'whereabouts of the water birds'. The creek got its current name in honor of the former banker John Gardiner from Melbourne, who settled in 1836 at the confluence of Kooyongkoot Creek in the Yarra River.
